Michelangelo is universally recognized as the greatest sculpture of all time. He lived for 89 years and never ceased creating: at 16 years old in 1491, he produced the \u201cMadonna della Scala\u201d and the \u201cBattle of the Centaurs\u201d (both at the Casa Buonarroti, Florence). 5 years later, in 1496, he went to Rome where he carved the \u201cBacchus\u201d (Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence) and when only 22, he created the famous Pieta (1497-99, Saint Peter\u2019s Rome), his only signed masterpiece.
\nOn his return to Florence in 1501 he carved the \u201cDavid\u201d, the \u201cMadonna of Bruges\u201d (1503) and the two reliefs: the \u201cPitti Tondo\u201d, which for the first time demonstrated his “unfinished” style, and the \u201cTondo Doni\u201d (Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence ).
\nFor the Cathedral of Bologna he produced the great bronze statue of Julius II (1506-8), now lost. For the monumental uncompleted tomb of Pope Julius II, Michelangelo executed a series of masterpieces: \u201cMoses\u201d, \u201cDying Slave\u201d, \u201cRebellious Slave\u201d (Louvre, Paris), \u2018Young Slave\u201d, \u2018Bearded Slave\u2019, \u201cAtlas\u201d and the \u201cAwakening Slave\u201d (Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence). During the same period, he sculpted the \u201cRisen Christ\u201d for the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome.
\nFor the New Sacristy (Sacrestia Nuova) in the Church of San Lorenzo in Florence between 1516 and 1534, he sculpted the Medici Tombs depicting Giuliano Duke of Nemours and Lorenzo Duke of Urbino, the \u201cMedici Madonna\u201d and the famous four allegories of \u201cDawn and Dusk\u201dand \u201cNight and Day. Between 1550 and 1558 he executed two Piet\u00e0s: The \u201cBandini Piet\u00e0\u201d (Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, Florence) where the face of Nicodemus is a self-portrait and at the age of 89, the \u201cRondanini Piet\u00e0 Rondanini\u201d (Castello Sforzesco, Milan), his last masterpiece.
