The Medici Madonna is a marble sculpture by Michelangelo Buonarroti, made between about 1521-1534 and part of the Medici Chapels in San Lorenzo in Florence. It was among the first statues to be begun for the decoration of the New Sacristy complex, but not it was never finished by the author, as is evident in many points and especially in the lower part. It is placed above the sarcophagus in which Lorenzo the Magnificent and his brother Giuliano de Medici have rested for centuries. It is characterized, by a dynamic motion obtained, by the contrast of the two bodies, placed in an opposite and complementary rotation: the Virgin is seated and nursing the Child who turns towards her hiding his face from the spectator.

Michelangelo Buonarroti

Bronze posthumous first edition original of Michelangelo’s “Medici Madonna” sculpture preserved in the Medici’s Chapel, San Lorenzo, Firenze

Lost wax casting in statuary bronze Work in limited edition from an original model made by the Ferdinando Marinelli Artistic Foundry

Height: 220 cm
