Description

The Moses is one of the greatest masterpieces of Italian art, preserved in the characteristic church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome. The marble sculpture sculpted by Michelangelo is an example of great craftsmanship and incomparable beauty.

The creation is part of the statuary complex conceived as the Tomb of Julius II.

Linked to this sculpture is the legendary anecdote according to which Michelangelo, contemplating it at the end of the last finishing touches and himself amazed by the realism of its forms, exclaimed “Why don’t you speak?” beating his knee with the hammer he was holding.

Regarding the majestic beard of Moses, however, Vasari said that it is sculpted with such perfection that it seems more “the work of a brush than a chisel.”
