Description
Nike is a white marble statue probably carved in Rhodes during the Hellenistic period to commemorate the victory in the Battle of the Eurymedon.
The island of Samothrace commemorated the successful outcome of the conflict by building a large votive temple in honor of the gods, on top of which Nike was placed. The artist is unknown.
The sculpture depicts the young winged goddess, who, dressed in a light chiton, is depicted here in the act of perching on the prow of a warship.
Interesting fact: to create the logo of the famous sportswear company “Nike,” the designers took inspiration from one of the wings of the statue.
